Deli Limes find lightning in a bottle, beat Fireballs
Riverdale Girls Soccer League
Younger Division
Liebman’s Deli Lightning Limes, 3
Drs. Gaynor and Goodman Fireballs, 0
The Lightning Limes continue to crush every opponent in their path, as the team picked up its eighth win in a row by shutting out the Fireballs 3-0. Kyra Roberts, Ciara Gaughan, Clara Worrall and Jessica Martin stood out for the Limes in the first half, but the Fireballs were able to keep the game scoreless at halftime. The second half was a different story, though, as the Limes found the back of the net three times. Midfielder Taylor Bookstaver played a role in all of her team’s goals, first recording an assist on each of Jade Greenfield’s two scores and then sending a corner kick towards the box that deflected off a Fireball player and into the net. Madeline Schmidt, Averianna Worrell and Kyana Rodriguez also played well to help secure the win for the Limes.
Older Division
Rolen Bagels Blue Steel, 2
Jacob, Medinger and Finnegan Red Bulls, 1
The Blue Steel edged past the Red Bulls by a score of 2-1 in a rematch from last weekend’s scoreless battle between the two teams. The Red Bulls lit the lamp first to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Blue Steel would respond right back with a beautiful passing display from Samantha Stone to Janell Rodriguez to Zaivy Luke-Aleman, who deposited the ball in the net to even the score at one. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Blue Steel’s defense, which did not allow the Red Bulls offense on to their side of the field. The Blue Steel took the lead after the break on a goal by Kayla Quinonez that proved to be the game-winner. Maya Miller and Gabriella Brown were superb in splitting the goalkeeping duties for the Blue Steel, while receiving strong defensive support from Sonnie Kirschbaum, Lilli Gelfand and Angelique Fenton.

Riverdale Wolverines, 4
Rye Brook Titans, 1
Evan Silverman scored a pair of goals to lead the Riverdale Wolverines in a 4-1 victory over the Titans at Blind Brook High School on Sunday afternoon. Silverman’s first goal came with just seconds left in the opening half and put the Wolverines in front 1-0 at the break. Then, Noah Temple scored on a terrific individual effort early in the second half to double the Riverdale lead. Rye Brook managed to score and cut the lead in half, but this was as close as they would get. Silverman added his second goal of the day and Larry Currier scored on a beautiful header in front of the net to ice the game for the undefeated Wolverines.
Under-12 boys
Riverdale Wildcats, 1
FC Greenburgh Utd. Revolution, 0
The Riverdale Wildcats notched their third straight victory with a 1-0 shutout of last-place Greenburgh. Midfielder Andy Barrera tallied the lone goal in the outing, scoring on a rebound from a Ciaran Burke shot during one of the many relentless Wildcat offensive attacks. However, apart from this goal, the stellar Greenburgh keeper foiled Riverdale’s scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the game. The Wildcats’ goaltending duo of David Lee and Freddy Stevenson shared the shutout.

Riverdale Bx Bombers, 2
Bedford Blast, 1
Despite falling behind 1-0 on a controversial penalty kick at the end of the first half, the Bronx Bombers pulled off a spectacular comeback and scored two second-half goals to win the game. Both of the Riverdale scores came as a result of corner kicks taken by Maryrita Curcio. The first kick sailed off the opposing goalie’s fingers and directly into the goal, while the second went right to teammate Nola Nelson, who was in perfect position at the front of the goal and put home the eventual game-winner. The Bombers defensive line of Yanni Chisholm, Maayan Dadsoh and Maya Greenfield successfully limited Bedford’s offensive opportunities, while goalie Lily Ehrlich made spectacular saves on the handful of shots that got through to her.
Middle school basketball
St. Margaret’s, 36
Annunciation of Crestwood, 23
Boz Bernstein scored a dozen points and teammate James Batista followed close behind with 11 points, as the duo led St. Margaret’s 7th- and 8th grade boys varsity basketball team to a 36-23 victory in their home opener.
However, for this one day, the action on the court took a backseat to an emotional ceremony that was held before the game. Prior to tip-off, the team announced that it was dedicating its season to fallen Yonkers firefighter Patrick Joyce, who was a member of St. Margaret’s class of 1984, as well as a former captain and MVP of the school’s basketball squad.
Following a moment of silence, a few of Joyce’s family members — parents Kathleen and Pat, sisters Julianne and Katie, daughters Isabella and Charlotte — were introduced to a standing ovation.
St. Margaret’s was well represented by a large group of alumni attending the game, including several former ballplayers as well as Pat Woods, who coached Patrick Joyce two decades ago and is still running the basketball program today.
High school cross country
Bronx Science heading to States
Bronx High School of Science is one of four New York City public schools that will be sending its boys varsity cross country team to the State Federation Championships, which will be held this upcoming weekend at Bowdoin Park in upstate New York.
The Wolverines qualified for the event after an impressive showing at the PSAL City Championship meet that took place at Van Cortlandt Park last Saturday afternoon. Bronx Science finished in fourth place out of 28 total schools participating in the overall 5K team competition.
Notable individual performances from the race include Bronx Science senior Hao Zhou, who finished in ninth place among the group of nearly 200 runners, as well as two fellow Wolverines, in senior Stephen McNamara and junior Aaron Somoroff, who both placed in the top 20.
