Penny social

St. John’s Church, located at 3021 Kingsbridge Ave., will hold a penny social, at 1 p.m.

The event will be held in the Stryker Room of the lower church. The cost is $5, which includes refreshments and 50 penny tickets.

Craft workshop

Van Cortlandt Park, located at West 246th Street and Broadway, will hold a special Holiday Eco-Crafts workshop, at 1 p.m.

Participants will get their imaginations flowing as they look to nature for inspiration in creating holiday-themed gifts for loved ones. This event is free and open to the public. Participants should meet at the nature center.

Indie band

Safe to Say, a four-piece pop/ rock/indie band, will play at the Nokia Theatre, located at 44th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, at 8 p.m.

Three of the band’s members are based in Riverdale: brothers Ryan Schira (guitarist) and Devan Schira (bassist) and lead singer Lowell Thompson.

The group will be playing with Badfish, a cover band.

Singles meeting

Young Single and Friends is meeting at the Starbucks Café at 3503 Johnson Ave., at 1 p.m.

Flea market

The Church of the Mediator, located at 260 W. 231st St., will host a Christmas flea market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Table rental is $20 for one table or $35 for two. Proceeds benefit the church.

A health fair will also be held at the church from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will be offered blood pressure screening and glucose testing.

Solstice concert

The Spuyten Duyvil Library, located at 650 W. 235th St., presents singer and cellist Barbara Reisman, at 2 p.m.

Ms. Reisman will perform a musical program intended to celebrate the joy to be found even on cold, short winter days.

Dream workshop

The Jewish Women’s Workshop of the Kingsbridge Center of Israel, located at 3115 Corlear Ave., presents a dream workshop, from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

Participants can explore the meaning of their dreams through an interactive and artistic workshop facilitated by Smadar Taub.

Concert film

The Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture will host a music on film night at its meeting house, located at 4450 Fieldston Road, at 7:30 p.m.

The screening will be “Bach: Mass in B Minor,” performed at Bach Collegium Stuttgart, and conducted by Helmuth Rilling. Artists include Arleen Auger, soprano; Anne Sofie Von Otter, mezzo; Aldo Baldwin, tenor; and Wolfgang Shone, bass.

Admission is $5.

Cooking demo

Wave Hill, located at West 249th Street and Independence Avenue, will host a cooking demonstration on the grounds in the Wave Hill House, at 1 p.m.

In this session, participants will learn to make stollen, a traditional holiday sweet bread with nuts, dried fruit and spices,

The demonstration will be led by chef Newton Pryce, of Wave Hill’s exclusive caterers, Great Performances.

The event is free with admission to the grounds.

Art project

Wave Hill, located at West 249th Street and Independence Avenue, will host a family art project, “Sparkle and Shine/ Brillo y luz,” from 1 to 4 p.m. on the grounds in the Sally and Gilbert Kerlin Learning Center.

Colombian-American artist Esperanza Cortés will help families work with shiny foil, glittery beads and natural wonders like cones and spices, turning them into glowing gifts and decorations.

The event will be repeated on Sunday, Dec. 20, and is free with admission to the grounds.
