Riverdale's busiest streets are a mess
To the editor:
Driving in Riverdale north of West 239th Street this summer has been extremely difficult. Currently, driving south on Riverdale Avenue, between West 256th and 252nd streets, is nearly impossible due to the combination of Con Ed construction and the neverending construction of the 252nd Street overpass. Everywhere one travels, the road is either mostly blocked by construction or covered with steel plates which are terror on one's tires.
In August many people are away. What further difficulties and potential disasters await us now that September has arrived. People have returned from vacation, school has opened at PS 81 and St. Margaret's and what will happen when the Jewish holidays arrive?
How could this Con Ed construction have been allowed on the busiest streets in Riverdale - streets on which many businesses, schools and houses of worship are located? What were the regulatory agencies thinking?
Our elected officials should collect the management of Con Ed and the agencies that regulate this construction and drive them around in this mess. They would then see the unconscionable situation in which they are forcing us to live.
