The life of a Norwood man was claimed Sunday night in a four-vehicle accident on Jerome Avenue that landed another one in jail.

It all took place a little after 8 p.m., Sunday, at Jerome Avenue just south of East 233rd Street, on the eastern side of Van Cortlandt Park, just inside the confines of the New York Police Department's 50th Precinct.

Authorities say Collin Hedley, 24, of 3525 Perry Ave., was driving his 2016 BMW south on Jerome in the left lane when he crossed over the double yellow lines, sideswiping a 2014 Honda SUV, operated by a 70-year-old woman police did not identify, who was traveling in the other direction.

Instead of coming to a stop, Hedley accelerated, according to police, going the wrong direction on Jerome, striking a 1995 Toyota sedan head-on, driven by Ramon Monteagudo, 59, of 249 E. 203rd St.

Monteagudo's car spun, hitting a 2013 Honda SUV driven by a 59-year-old woman that was heading northbound in the right lane, striking the right passenger door of Monteagudo's vehicle.

Hedley jumped from his car and ran from the scene, police said, before returning a short time later and placed under arrest.

Monteagudo was rushed to Montefiore Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Hedley was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and driving a car without a license.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
