Afternoon robber strikes Chase Bank

Posted

A man withdrew $1,855 in cash from the Chase Bank at 5581 Broadway on Monday around 3:40 p.m., only he did not use an ATM card, according to police.

Authorities said a 6-foot-4 black man between 30 and 35 years old handed a note to a teller saying he had a gun and demanding cash.

While he was not reported to have displayed a weapon, the teller was quick to comply with the demand.

Police said after taking the money, the man, who was wearing a navy blue hat, striped button-down shirt and blue jeans, simply stepped outside the bank’s pedimented entryway and walked north up Broadway.

Several hours after the incident, street vendors working at the time of the crime reported seeing police cars arrive to investigate the scene. But none had observed anything out of the ordinary prior to that.

“It’s nice and quiet… safe,” Jay Patel, 42, who sells newspapers out of a stand at Broadway and West 231st Street, said of the neighborhood.

The robbery case remains under investigation.
