Animals are little league champions


The West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital Animals clawed their way to the South Riverdale Little League seniors division title with a 4-3 win over the Parkview Dodgers in a nail-biter on June 16 at Seton Park. 

Asher Raduns-Silverstein and Miguel Nunez walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. After they attempted a double steal, Raduns-Silverstein scored the go-ahead run when Nunez got caught in a rundown between second and third base.

The Dodgers tied the game at 3 in the top of the inning, as Gabriel Zambrana singled, stole second and scored on an error.

The Animals scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Zack Farber’s single drove in Kenneth Rodriguez, who led off the inning with a walk and then stole second and third base. Brian Alberts and Farber scored on successive wild pitches.

Rodriguez, who earned a complete-game win, retired the first five Dodgers batters before Marcus Diaz hit a two-out single in the second and stole second base. Eamon Coffey knocked him in with a single, and he stole second and scored on an error to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Rory Naughton reached on an error and Kristian Ragluns and Ben Saer both walked to load the bases, but Zambrana got a key strikeout to keep the Animals off the board.  

The Dodgers threatened to score late in the game, but Rodriguez shut them down to seal the championship.
