Buzzer-beater snaps Dolphins' winning streak

Kelly Fraser is the lone senior on the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s basketball team.

So, even though she believes the Dolphins will bounce back from their heartbreaking, 67-64 loss at Farmingdale State on Saturday that snapped the team’s seven-game winning streak, she took the defeat hard.

“This was a tough way to lose,” Fraser said after Farmingdale’s Andrea Desvignes hit the game-winning 3-pointer with one second left. “I thought we would go to overtime. It was a lucky shot.”

“But I don’t see us losing another game. We’re not going to stop until we get to the NCAA tournament,” she added.

If the Dolphins are to secure the Skyline Conference’s automatic bid to the tournament in March, it will likely be on the shoulders on Fraser, their 5-11 center from Staten Island. Fraser has won the conference’s Player of the Week four times this season, including each of the last two weeks, and against Farmingdale, she had 22 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks.

“I don’t take any accolades as my accolades; I take them as a team accolade,” Fraser said. “We’re a very young team, but everybody respects each other and I have complete faith in all of them.”

Fraser ranks second in the conference in scoring, at 15.7 points per game, and leads the league in rebounding (11.2 per game) and field-goal percentage (.483), as she has led CMSV to a 12-3 start (3-1 in conference). The Dolphins’ seven-game winning streak, which included a 14-point win over defending Skyline champion Sage, was their longest in five seasons.

“I have all the confidence in the world of the team,” said third-year head coach Kevin Clifford. “The program’s come a long way. Our college and our team are on the right road and our players are great as far as character. It’s a culture — they execute on the court, they work hard and they’re doing well in the classroom.”
