Children’s haircutter searches for new home in Riverdale

Riverdale is about to lose its Someplace Special, at least temporarily.

Suzanne Axelbank, who owns the children’s haircutting salon, said she is leaving her location at 490 W. 238th St. when her lease expires at the end of the month and she’s hoping to find a new location soon.

She said would like to rent space in an already established salon.

“The perfect thing for me would be to share with somebody, if they have room for me to share, particularly on days when they’re not around,” Ms. Axelbank said.

Ms. Axelbank has been cutting hair for 35 years, but said she founded Someplace Special about a decade ago after realizing that cutting children’s hair was her true calling. Since then, she said she’s acquired customers who will drive as far as 50 miles to bring their kids to see her.

“I happen to love what I do. I love working on kids’ hair. That’s not something that’s easy to find, someone who loves doing children’s hair.” Ms. Axelbank said. “There are painters who paint with oil colors and painters who paint with watercolor and they just know what they like and understand, and I understand children’s hair.”

Ms. Axelbank said she’s leaving her current location, where she’s been for the last 10 years, because of a combination of financial and maintenance-related issues.

It was unclear whether The Page Turner, a children’s bookstore that recently opened out of the same West 238th Street location, will also be moving.

Calls to The Page Turner were not immediately returned.
