College-bound at IN-Tech

Twenty-seven colleges visited IN-Tech on Oct. 23 for its college fair, ready to provide students with information about the schools and their application processes.

But in addition to brochures, the visits have given many IN-Tech students  the motivation they needed to get serious about the college application process.

“After these college fairs, I started getting better grades,” said 16-year-old student Joshua Sanchez, who hopes to major in criminal justice.

“I realized I needed better grades to get into certain colleges,” he said.

It was a realization many students at the college fair had at a young age.

At IN-Tech, students have the opportunity to attend the school’s college fairs as early as sixth grade.

Junior Briascis Linares, 16, said she went  to  her first college fair in ninth grade.
“I learned that you really have to focus and get good grades in order to get into the colleges you want to get into,” she said.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to get to know what the colleges offer and what to expect to get in,” added 17-year-old Alexis Vega, a senior who plans to major in speech pathology or audiology.

Along with motivation to improve academically, many students saw the fair as a place to envision their futures.

“I want a successful life,” said 16-year-old Arline Bueno. She hopes to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology or Pratt Institute to study fashion design or art. But she was open to looking at other schools that day, stopping at booths to collect pamphlets from schools like Utica College.

Seventeen-year-old Zuhriya Fathima, who is interested in biology and medicine, explained the fair’s appeal.

“They really give us an idea of who we want to be in the future,” she said.

Briascis said she is looking at SUNY Albany or New Paltz for accounting, but is keeping her options open.

“They have really good colleges here,” she said. “It’s amazing to see that we have opportunities to be able to attend these colleges.”
