Come together for the Greenway

This past April, The New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (“NYMTC”) released a report setting forth its latest draft plan for the future Bronx Greenway, which would provide a much-needed link between Manhattan and Westchester’s cycling paths. Responding to community demand for waterfront access, NYMTC, to its credit, produced a plan recommending a route adjacent to the Hudson River, with the caveat that many hurdles have yet to be overcome to make it a reality. This route will provide two miles of waterfront access for the public.  NYMTC will unveil the plan on June 24 at the third annual Riverdale Riverfest, and will solicit comments from festival attendees.

With the Greenway design nearing completion, the need to come together as a community to support NYMTC’s plan has taken on a new urgency. Now, more than ever, we must come out in numbers and show strong community support for waterfront access and a river-adjacent Greenway. Each and every one of you can do this by attending the Sunday, June 24 festival, which runs from noon to 6 p.m. on the campus of the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

If supporting the Bronx Greenway were not enough of an incentive to attend Riverdale Riverfest 2012, here are a few additional ones:

We take pride in announcing this year’s festival highlights: the renowned Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the John J. Harvey Fireboat, and the AJ Meerwald oyster schooner, all of which will be available for public rides. Reservations can be made via our website — www.riverdaleriverfest.org — after June 4

River and environment-themed exhibits will abound, including, for the first time, the Bronx Children’s Museum’s newly minted “Bronx River on the Go” bus, featuring an exhibit on our borough’s other great river.

Back by popular demand, the Society for Creative Anachronism will stage a medieval battle and showcase Renaissance period crafts.

A rotating schedule of musicians and performing arts groups, including two local children’s theater groups, will provide entertainment from our state-of-the-art bandstand.
