New York State correctional officer Brian Mills, 35, was killed in a car accident on the Major Deegan Expressway in North Riverdale shortly after 6 a.m. on Sept. 13, according to the FDNY.

According to police, Mr. Mills was driving his 2004 Honda Accord northbound on the Major Deegan when he collided with the back of a box truck, causing him to subsequently crash into a Department of Transportation vehicle. Fire officials said the accident occurred close to Exit 12, where the expressway meets Mosholu Parkway.

Mr. Mills, an Upper Manhattan resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the FDNY. The demolished sedan was relocated to a parking lot across from the 50th Precinct the afternoon of the accident. Concerned passersby could be seen examining the remains, which included deployed airbags, broken windows and car seats stained with blood.
