Deli Limes find lightning in a bottle, beat Fireballs
Riverdale Girls Soccer League Younger Division Liebman’s Deli Lightning Limes, 3 The Lightning Limes continue to crush every opponent in their path, as the team picked up its eighth win in a row by shutting out the Fireballs 3-0. Kyra Roberts, Ciara Gaughan, Clara Worrall and Jessica Martin stood out for the Limes in the first half, but the Fireballs were able to keep the game scoreless at halftime. The second half was a different story, though, as the Limes found the back of the net three times. Midfielder Taylor Bookstaver played a role in all of her team’s goals, first recording an assist on each of Jade Greenfield’s two scores and then sending a corner kick towards the box that deflected off a Fireball player and into the net. Madeline Schmidt, Averianna Worrell and Kyana Rodriguez also played well to help secure the win for the Limes. Older Division Rolen Bagels Blue Steel, 2 The Blue Steel edged past the Red Bulls by a score of 2-1 in a rematch from last weekend’s scoreless battle between the two teams. The Red Bulls lit the lamp first to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Blue Steel would respond right back with a beautiful passing display from Samantha Stone to Janell Rodriguez to Zaivy Luke-Aleman, who deposited the ball in the net to even the score at one. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Blue Steel’s defense, which did not allow the Red Bulls offense on to their side of the field. The Blue Steel took the lead after the break on a goal by Kayla Quinonez that proved to be the game-winner. Maya Miller and Gabriella Brown were superb in splitting the goalkeeping duties for the Blue Steel, while receiving strong defensive support from Sonnie Kirschbaum, Lilli Gelfand and Angelique Fenton.
