POLITICAL ARENA
Diaz to Klein: come home
Do the Senate Democrats have any chance of regaining the majority this year? Probably not. But State Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. said he thinks they have a shot if they bring back members of the Independent Democratic Conference, including state Sen. Jeff Klein, by awarding them leadership positions. Every once in a while, Mr. Diaz sends out words of wisdom to his constituents, fellow Democrats or whoever. He dubs these columns “What You Should Know.” His most recent “What You Should Know” is a strategic plan for Democrats to take back the Senate. It begins with this line: “I am not a political analyst, I am not a political consultant, neither am I a political strategist, but looking at our recent situation as Democrats in the New York State Senate, I cannot refrain from putting in my two cents.” Mr. Diaz continues, “I believe that the four Senate Independent Democrats will never come back just to be simple Members of the Democratic Conference,” and that Democrats should start negotiating with the IDC right now to give them leadership positions and bring them back into the fold, à la state Sen. Pedro Espada in 2009. Is this a jab at Senate Majority Leader John Sampson? In November, Mr. Diaz told the Daily News he was going to “be a troublemaker for everybody” when session begins and expressed distaste for Mr. Sampson on the gay marriage legislation. “My leader, John Sampson, did not even stand up to defend my right to speak,” Mr. Diaz told the Daily News. “He allowed my rights to be violated.” One thing’s for sure, Mr. Diaz is not alone in the opinion that Mr. Klein should come back to the regular Democrats. When speaking to state Sen. Adriano Espaillat about whether Democrats could win back a majority in the Senate in early January, he said Mr. Klein and Co. should return from whence they came. “We hope Senator Klein comes back home. We want him to come back home,” Mr. Espaillat said. Mr. Espaillat said he has a good relationship with Mr. Klein and the two worked on foreclosure prevention last year. It seems nearly impossible that Democrats would be able to gain two seats anyway, so it’s most likely a moot point.
