Dinowitz calls for even stronger traffic measures

Posted

After local officials announced traffic measures to increase safety at the intersection of W. 231st Street and Riverdale Avenue, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz is calling for even stronger tactics by the Department of Transportation.

In a letter to Transportation Department Commissioner Constance Moran, Mr. Dinowitz proposed an array of changes, ranging from extended time at crosswalks to adding an arrow signal for drivers making a left turn on the south side of Riverdale Avenue.

The department has already pledged to put up school safety signs on the intersection to make drivers more aware of pedestrians.

“While this action is a step forward in improving this dangerous intersection, I still firmly believe that the DOT should install a pointed arrow left turn signal at this site for southbound traffic,” Mr. Dinowitz said in his letter. “Moreover, crossing times for the pedestrian signals at the crosswalks should be extended to accommodate the slower walking speeds of those who are elderly or disabled, and an audible signal for the blind should be installed as well.”

Third primary of the year fast approaching

There are a number of races to watch, as the New York state and local primary election comes down the pike.

First, voters in Kingsbridge and Marble Hill will decide the victor in the hotly contested rematch between state Sen. Gustavo Rivera and Councilman Fernando Cabrera.

The two exchanged insults and accusations all summer, each comparing the other to Donald Trump at points.

Second, there is a less-followed race in the 72nd Assembly District between incumbent Assemblyman Guillermo Linares and challenger Carmen De La Rosa, who has won a number of key endorsements including those from City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Councilman Ritchie Torres.

Ms. De La Rosa formerly worked as chief of staff for Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez and, like Mr. Linares, is a Dominican-American.

“Carmen De La Rosa has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout her career at the council, leading to major legislative accomplishments,” Mark-Viverito said in a statement, announcing her endorsement. “We need more women of color in positions of leadership and I can think of few more capable than Carmen. Her experience, energy and fresh perspective will benefit upper Manhattan residents tremendously and I am proud to endorse her candidacy for [New York State] Assembly.”
