Sports Eagles score birdies at golf tourneyBy Raphael Sugarman Posted 5/30/12
The Fieldston Eagles boys captured the New York state golf championship for independent schools, while sophomore Will Bernstein repeated as the tournament’s individual champion. The league, formally called the New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association (NYSAISAA), held its tournament at the Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck on May 23. Fieldston, which finished second in the tournament last year, had a combined score of 391 at this year’s event. Horace Mann finished second, while Riverdale Country School was third. A total of 12 teams competed in the event. Fieldston’s winning team was comprised of Bernstein, whose 68 was 4 strokes better than his score last year, sophomore Gordon Moore, who shot a 77, senior Max Elgart, who earned a 79, junior Chris Broadie, who shot an 81, freshman Daniel Melcher, who finished with an 86, and junior David Wechsler, who shot an 89. Each team’s top five scores comprise its total. “This was great, I thought we had the talent to win the state,” said Fieldston’s veteran coach John Dwinell. Bernstein shot 4 birdies on the last 8 holes of the tournament, the coach reported. “That’s where he really stands out. He gets stronger as the match goes on.” While the coach heaped praise on his entire team, he called Broadie the most improved player. He also said that the team’s strong scores of 77, 79 and 81 in its second, third and fourth spots were key to its win. “That was key to us,” he said. “Without them, we wouldn’t have won the state championship.” Riverdale coach Andy Marinos praised his team’s season-long improvement this year. “We’re young, guys kept getting better and to get third place out of 12 teams is quite an accomplishment,” said the coach. Falcons’ sophomore Dan Levin finished second in the tournament, with a 73, while freshman Dave McDaniel scored a 78. Horace Mann coach Bob Annunziata could not be reached for comment.
