Fieldston School gets ready for expansion

Representatives from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School (ECFS) went before Community Board 8’s Land Use Committee to present the scope of work for a 2,900-square-foot expansion to the fourth floor of its Lower School building on June 9. The first phase of construction is scheduled to run from Sunday, July 17 to Tuesday, Aug. 30 and will take place on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“We have felt the need to revamp and rebuild our math and science curriculum and so this new classroom space will house that new math and science program,” said Sarah Danzing Simon, the school’s director of strategic planning and board relations

The construction will also include the installation of an elevator and some interior renovations.

ECFS’ Lower School building sits near the edge of its property line, so trucks will be outside of the school.

“Drivers may approach the school from either Broadway or Greystone depending on their route and origin,” spokeswoman Meredith Halpern said in a statement.

Additionally, for three days, a crane will hoist materials to the roof of the Lower School.

Citing potential disruption to the neighborhood, Land Use Chairman Charles Moerdler told ECFS representatives that the board would not support any potential permits that call for weekend or evening work. Mr. Moerdler also reprimanded the school for failing to submit a master plan more than one year after his committee asked it to do so.

Phase two of the project, which includes work on the interior of the Lower School building’s fourth floor and limited exterior work, is scheduled to take place through the fall and in spring 2017.
