Deirdre Lok, the assistant director and counsel of the Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, has been appointed to the 2015 Age-friendly New York City Commission.

The commission grew out of Age-friendly NYC, which was launched in 2007 as a partnership between the mayor’s office, the City Council and the New York Academy of Medicine, according to a release from the Hebrew Home.

Age-friendly NYC works closely with city government, business and non-profit sectors on addressing challenges and leveraging the opportunities posed by a rapidly increasing population of older New Yorkers in four major areas: community and civic participation; housing; public spaces and transportation; and health and social services.

“I am excited and honored to join the NYC Age-friendly Commission,” Ms. Lok said in a statement. “Elder abuse is a life and death concern that effects thousands of New Yorkers daily, and I look forward to participating in the commission and increasing public awareness of this important issue.”

The Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention is the nation’s first elder abuse shelter.  The Hebrew Home said since the center’s founding in 2005, it has provided over 70,000 days of shelter to victims of elder abuse.
