A Kingsbridge resident whose parents live in Riverdale has been selected for the NYC Urban Fellows Program for 2016-17.

Thomas Rachko, Jr. of Hunter College’s class of 2015 will begin a nine-month fellowship at the mayor’s office and city agencies in September. He also will engage in an intensive seminar series that explores current urban issues impacting politics.

“I’m honored to be selected for the Urban Fellows program and I’m looking forward to helping my city,” Mr. Rachko said in a statement. “I want to work on expanding access to services for all New Yorkers.”

The statement added that Mr. Rachko, a history major, is hoping the NYC Urban Fellows program will enable him to better serve the people of New York and provide guidance regarding his future plans for grad school. He also was a Hunter College Public Service Scholar and has had internships with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn and NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

He’s currently working as an advocate with the Urban Justice Center in East Harlem, assisting people who receive public benefits.
