Is a ferry feasible?
By Manny Grossman Board members passed a resolution supporting a "feasibility study" for ferry service in Riverdale at a Nov. 20 joint meeting of Community Board 8's traffic and transit committee and environment and sanitation committee. Ari Hoffnung of the Riverdale Ferry Coalition gave a presentation of what he feels are the advantages of high-speed ferry service for Riverdale commuters, such as reduced commuting time and a more pleasant commuting experience. Traffic and transportation committee member Damian McShane said that although he personally couldn't afford the $12 ferry fare, "We should endorse this and request government funding for a study." Mr. Cassino agreed. "It's a great idea that's long overdue in a city surrounded by water," but cautioned that the "devil is in the details." He pointed out that issues that have sandbagged ferry proposals in the past, such as location and terminal infrastructure, still need to be worked out. He also said that the $12 fare is prohibitive for Riverdale's mainly middle-class residents. "Even with a tough commute" on the subways, "it's still only four dollars a day," he said. Despite these issues, Mr. Hoffnung said he was "grateful that the committee passed a resolution expressing support." He is hoping the full board will pass the resolution at their Dec. 11 meeting.
