Kiwanis Club hosts 56th Halloween painting contest

Posted 10/24/12

How much is that zombie in the window?

The Kiwanis Club of Riverdale will host its 56th annual Halloween window painting contest on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Children ages 6 to 14 are invited to participate in the free event.

Kiwanis is requesting that individuals or businesses in the community contribute a minimum of $20 per window to sponsor the event. The club is working with local schools to recruit children to paint, and will assign each child a specific store window to paint with a Halloween theme.

All contestants should meet at either Blue Bay Diner, located at 3533 Johnson Ave., or Chase Bank, located at 3775 Riverdale Ave., at 9 a.m. Painting must be completed by 3 p.m. to be judged.

The kids will use only washable colors mixed with Bon Ami cleanser for ease of washing and will be supervised to ensure that businesses are not hampered.

A group of independent judges will review the windows and pick five winners. The names of these winners, as well as all participating merchants, will be published in The Riverdale Press.

The Kiwanis Club cannot guarantee a child for each store window, but promises to make every effort to match children with participants. The group said it plans to earmark all money raised for community service projects.

In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28, also at 9 a.m.
