If the Riverdale Neighborhood House’s latest idea for a fundraiser gets an icy reception the area’s most venerable community center will be delighted. That’s because it has organized a Glide-a-Thon at the new Van Cortlandt Park Ice Skating Rink to benefit its teen internship programs.
Families, friends and supporters of Neighborhood House will have exclusive use of the rink for two hours beginning at 6:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25.
When tickets are purchased in advance, fees of $50 per family or $25 per individual include skate rentals and refreshments. Tickets purchased at the door cost $5 more, but organizers caution that space is limited and recommend advance reservations.
RNH’s internship programs offer teens the opportunity to explore new interests and give back to the community while getting a taste of possible future careers.
Environmental internships, under the direction of Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, teach participants about composting, trail management in the park and water quality monitoring in the lake. At Schervier Nursing Care Center, interns lay the groundwork for health care careers and bridge the gap between seniors and students.
At the RNH campus, teens learn about careers in education while helping out with children in the afters-chool program. And “mini” internships at local businesses are often available, too. To learn more, call 718-549-8100 ext. 112.
