The local Little Leagues are winding up their playoff seasons and crowning champions after a spring of fun, friendship and learning. Some of the leagues held their championship games between June 14 and June 18. Other leagues are still in the midst of their playoffs. Next on the agenda are the travel seasons in which most leagues participate during the summer months.
Bruins, Huskies to seek crown
The Bruins and the Huskies will meet for the NRBL girls’ softball title, after the Bruins eliminated the Leaders 14-3 in the semi-finals on June 15.
The Bruins led off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Shannon O’Connell hit a single and quickly stole second, followed by an RBI triple by Lily Becker. Sydney Thomas then cleared the bases with a 2-run homer. Liandry Almonte followed with a double, Caitlyn McEntire hit an RBI single and Odette Dominguez added a single.
Kelly Lavery hit an RBI single, ending the inning, due to the 5-run maximum rule.
Leaders’ pitcher Kristen Izquierdo and Bruins pitcher Lily Becker had 1-2-3 innings in the second.
In the top of the third, Leader Alana Pons opened the inning with a soaring solo home run. Aleena Waldron and Brandy Cruger also had hits.
In the bottom of third, Bruins’ pitcher O’Connell singled and took second on an overthrow, then stole third. Becker walked and Thomas hit an RBI single. Almonte hit an RBI double, followed by RBI singles by McEntire and Dominguez, scoring 4 runs.
