Local legends honored by Jewish group

The hoopla surrounding the United States Women’s World Cup championship has died down some since the U.S. victory over Japan in the final game on July 5. But not all the soccer accolades are reserved for Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan and co. In fact, one local soccer star will be honored by the Jewish Sports Heritage Association (JSHA) after a stellar season at Riverdale Country School, while an iconic former boys soccer coach at Horace Mann will also be feted by the JSHA.

Former Riverdale goal keeper Jenny Kronish, who led the Falcons to the Ivy League title this season, and former Horace Mann boys soccer head coach Dan Alexander will be among the honorees when the JSHA holds its’ awards ceremony in the fall.

For Kronish, who will be named the Outstanding Jewish High School Player of the Year, it’s the capper to a splendid senior season at Riverdale.

“I had no idea that I would be receiving this award,” Kronish said. “But I am sincerely grateful. I am truly honored to be named the Outstanding Jewish High School Player of the Year. I have played and loved soccer my entire life and it’s amazing to be recognized for it. I really appreciate this award and hope it inspires more girls to play soccer in the future."

Kronish put up mind-boggling numbers this past season as Riverdale rolled to a 17-2-1 record while claiming the Ivy League championship. The 6-1 senior logged an uncanny 12 shutouts on the season while the Falcons came within one victory of winning the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) state title.
