Leslie Goldfischer, a Riverdale resident for almost 40 years, died on Saturday, June 28 at age 64, after a prolonged and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Ms. Goldfischer was born at Bronx Lebanon Hospital to Leopold and Helen Feingold, both European refugees from the Holocaust. She grew up in Washington Heights, attended public school and graduated from Lehman College.

She had a very strong work ethic and, while still a 16-year-old student at George Washington High School, began her career in the health services field as administrative assistant to her uncle, a physician at Jewish Memorial Hospital in Inwood. During her college years, Leslie continued to work for doctors at French and Polyclinic Hospital and at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Ms. Goldfischer was married in 1975 and moved to Riverdale with her husband, Charles. In 1977, the couple lived in Brussels for one year, but maintained their Riverdale apartment. Upon their return to Riverdale, she began working at Riverdale Mental Health Association, on Independence Avenue at the time. Over the next 35 years, she worked at RMHA, taking time off to care for each of her sons, Michael and Joshua before they started school.

Ms. Goldfischer’s funeral on Monday, June 30 at Riverside Memorial Chapel was attended by many people who knew, respected and loved her deeply. She will be missed very much by everyone whose life she touched. She is survived by her husband Charles, her sons Michael and Joshua, her daughter in law Karen, her mother Helen and her brother Gary. Sadly, she did not live to see the birth of her first grandchild, expected in September.
