Police officers inspect the body of a man found on the tracks of the Broadway No. 1 line on Thanksgiving morning. The man, Eric Martinez, may have been hit by a train.

Washington Heights resident Eric Martinez, 26, was found dead on the tracks at the West 231st Street No. 1 train station early Thanksgiving Day.

A conductor stopped the southbound train he was driving because he thought he saw garbage on the tracks, only to discover the body of Mr. Martinez, police said.

Mr. Martinez was unconscious and unresponsive when police and EMS arrived, shortly before 7 a.m. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police have yet to determine how Mr. Martinez ended up on the tracks. A police source said an investigation is ongoing, but no criminality is suspected. It is unclear if Mr. Martinez was hit by a train, but it appears likely.

“We suspect he was hit earlier in the day,” Capt. Kevin Burke said.

No. 1 train service was delayed after the body was found, but service later resumed with trains bypassing the 231st Street station.
