Mercy to Hamas? A despicable idea

To the editor:

Your editorial that Israel should show “mercy to Hamas’ is despicable.  The Hamas charter states clearly that its goal is not only to eradicate Israel but to kill Jews. Hamas deliberately fires its rockets from dense population areas to illicit a return response which will result in the killing of some Arab civilians. Hamas mothers are taught that it is a glory for their children to be killed so they can become martyrs.

It is particularly ironic that publications such as The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and Investor’s Business Daily — all owned by non-Jews — have been most vocal in pointing out the hypocrisy in pointing out the disproportionate casualties among Palestinians.

There have been many demonstrations in Europe which featured demonstrators calling for the extermination of Jews. The New York Times did not publicize these demonstrations but the newspapers above chose to publicize these activities. There are 250 – 300 million Arabs surrounding Israel. There are 1.6 billion Muslims. There are only six million Jews in Israel and six million Jews in the rest of the world. Even at the present rate of Israeli casualties and Palestinian casualties, the Jews would be wiped out long before the Arabs.

Israel has repeatedly attempted to come to an agreement with Arabs so that the populations could live peacefully and beneficially with each other.  It is Arabs such as Hamas that have never been willing to agree to live peacefully with Israel. Instead of asking for mercy on the part of Israel for Arabs, maybe it is time to address the issue of the Nazi-like extermination hopes of Arabs such as Hamas, who wish to exterminate the Jews.

There are a significant number of Arabs who are willing to live peacefully with Jews.  Unfortunately, they have not been able to become the predominant voice.

Editor’s note: Last week’s editorial said Mr. Engel should “call on Israel to show the Palestinian people mercy” — not Hamas.
