NW Bronx braces for blizzard

With perhaps the largest storm in the city's history expected to begin this afternoon, authorities are bracing for the worst, activating snow plows and salt trucks throughout the northwest Bronx.

As snow began to fall on Monday afternoon, a 27-year veteran of the Parks Department reflected on her task.

"We're salting, shovelling and de-icing," Maddy Silva, 59, said while shoveling snow on Broadway near the Van Cortlandt Park subway station. "I'm just making a path for everyone. It's what we have to do. We'll salt heavy now and hope it works," she said.

Ms. Silva added she would be on call for the next 20 hours.

Some commuters dreaded likely public transportation slowdowns, though authorities were yet to announce service changes for Tuesday.

One bus rider, Muhammad Malik, 21, said that his plans to attend a new job training session in Manhattan might not be possible.

"I read some travel tips in the paper, but there's just going to be more traffic, buses running overtime," he said. "I'm just going to have to take a look if I can make it."

Here is a round-up of area closures and service changes. You can also find safety tips from the Red Cross here.
