Hoops clinic open house

It doesn’t matter how skilled you are — all children are welcome at the New York City Elite Basketball Camp.

The camp is holding an open house on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. at the Lower House of the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, located at 3901 Fieldston Road.

Camp co-founder Dahntay Jones of the Los Angeles Clippers had a vision of providing professional coaching to all individuals with a passion for the game. The staff is comprised of college and NBA players. From a young age, they say, children will develop skills that will translate to life beyond basketball.

The goal of New York City Elite is to foster a safe environment where children develop their love of the game in a fun setting. The eight-week-long fall session begins on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Choral Society seeks singers

The Riverdale Choral Society begins its fall season on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. This diverse and friendly group invites interested singers to come and try out.

The society seeks singers in all voice parts. There is always a need for more tenors and basses. For people who attend the first rehearsal, there is another one on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Sight-reading ability is helpful, but not required. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings at Christ Church, Riverdale. The chorus is an independent entity with no religious affiliation.

The society plans to prepare Rossini’s “Petite Messe Solennelle” under the direction of John Lettieri. Despite the name, it is anything but petite.

The performance by the Riverdale Choral Society will use Rossini’s original accompaniment of piano and organ, which is often substituted for the  harmonium. It will take place on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. at Christ Church.

For more information about the chorus, visit www.riverdalechoral.org, or call to speak with a longtime member at 718-543-2219. You can also send an email to riverdalechoral@gmail.com.
