No ‘encampment’ in Ewen Park

Posted

Ewen Park had not been a reported location of homeless individuals until very recently (“Ewen Park has become homeless campsite,” Sept. 24). The issue was brought up at a Precinct Community Council meeting earlier this month. It was immediately addressed and two or three homeless persons were contacted, offered services and/or summonsed for various infractions. Repeat inspections have revealed that at least one person repeatedly returns to the location. He has been summonsed and removed from the park. He may return.

If homeless individuals are encountered, please notify 311 by phone or Internet at www.nyc.gov/311. Please leave contact information for a follow up if the Police cannot locate the person.

There is no encampment in Ewen Park. An encampment is defined as an area containing some type of structure, (tarps, tents, plywood shanties, or similar structure). Since Jan. 1, there have been only eleven 311 calls regarding homeless issues in the 50th Precinct. The only report of homeless in Ewen Park was on Sept. 13. It was an anonymous report and the subject was gone from the area when the assigned Officers responded.

Please advise complainants to call 311 as soon as possible with exact locations.

I hope this clears up this issue.

Capt. Terence M. O’Toole is the commanding officer of the 50th Precinct.
