No need to study traffic on Broadway
To the editor: Hardly a week goes by without an accident occurring on Broadway. In fact, hardly a month goes by with The Riverdale Press running a story about these events. For years, this has been the case. Now suddenly, the Department of Transportation is going to do a study to determine how to make Broadway safer? Please. Accidents occur because people are intimidated by the elevated trains, by the buses that stop to pick up their passengers, and because cars careen down the street without regard to the pedestrian traffic they encounter. There’s your study. Now, put your wallet away. Solutions: none. There are double lines so cars should not be trying to circumvent stopped busses. There are traffic lights so cars should not be trying to outrun pedestrians crossing the streets. There are trestles with girders holding them up and no one is going to remove them anytime soon. People who drive on Broadway have to be more careful and reduce their speed so as to be able to stop in time to avert an accident. We were granted a license to drive. Now it’s time we exercised the responsibility that accompanies this privilege. KEN CHORZEWSKI
