No new principal for PS 24 yet

With the new school year less than two months away, the Spuyten Duyvil School (P.S. 24) still has no principal - nor does the Department of Education have any immediate plans to hire one, officials told The Press.

The Education Department continues to delay the hiring process “pending an investigation,” a spokesman said in emailed comments Thursday. He did not elaborate on the details of the investigation.

In the meantime, Andrea Feldman will continue in her role as acting principal, and Manny Verdi remains an assistant principal, the Education Department said.

The head of a community education council of District 10 in the northwest Bronx, Marvin Shelton, said he had “received no information” from the Education Department about any search for a new principal.

Ms. Feldman has been leading the school since former principal Donna Connelly resigned last fall amid a series of controversies. Some parents praised Ms. Connelly for creating an atmosphere of academic excellence, while teachers gave her negative reviews. During her tenure, enrollment shot up by almost 250 students.

Meanwhile, the school’s Mr. Verdi has been embroiled in a dispute with northwest Bronx Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz over kindergarten enrollment, overcrowding and other issues.

The first day of school at P.S. 24 begins on Sept. 8, and a number of parents bemoaned the lack of a new principal, saying their children deserve better.
