Lehman Students win fellowship

Kiyoko Hairston and Syeda Kabir of Lehman College have each been rewarded a $10,00 fellowship from the Women’s Forum of New York, which recognizes women over 35 who have overcome challenges to pursue their academic goals.

Syeda Kabir came to New York from Bangladesh to secure a better education for her two children. Over time, she completed her associate’s degree at Hostos Community College and entered Lehman College as an accounting major, where she has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.

Kiyoko Hairston came to New York to pursue a career in entertainment when she suffered an assault while working as a restaurant hostess, which set her back considerably. After jobs that go the way she had hoped, Hairston came back to college to pursue theater and dietetics.

Psyched about teaching award

Arno Kolz, an associate professor of psychology at Manhattan College, received the second annual Brother Casimir Gabriel Costello Award for Excellence in Teaching.

“I couldn’t imagine teaching anywhere else,” Mr. Kolz said in a statement. “I love the small class size, how we get to know our students really well, and have the ability to teach and mentor students during their time in college and as alumni.”

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Jinnette and James Ostrander welcomed daughter Cameron May Ostrander, their first child, on Sept. 8. Grandparents are Eileen and Peter Ostrander and Gina and Gary Oliver and great grandparents Marion Ostrander and Giovanna Orlando are all proud. Cameron, born into two New York Knickerbocker families, is a 12th-generation Ostrander (1661) in America and 13th-generation Oliver (1685) in America.
