MC offers scholarships

For the third year, bestselling author James Patterson will award $110,000 in academic scholarships to Manhattan College students — 10 juniors and 10 seniors from the Schools of Arts, Business, Education and Health, Engineering and Science.

“This scholarship program at my alma mater recognizes hard-working students who combine academic excellence with the Lasallian values that the College embodies,” Mr. Patterson, a class of 1969 graduate, said in a statement. “With this recognition, my hope is that these students will continue to excel at Manhattan College and after they graduate.”

Violence against women is topic

According to human rights advocate Nicole Auerbach, “an estimated one in three of the world’s women will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Further, 10 million girls under the age of 18 enter into early and forced marriages each year. In 77 countries around the world, homosexuality is illegal — punishable by imprisonment and, in some cases, by death.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m., at Riverdale Temple, Ms. Auerbach will lead a discussion on the latest issues and initiatives regarding global violence against women, girls and members of the LGBT community.

She is a member of the American Jewish World Service (AJWS) New York Action Team, which advances the goals of “We Believe,” AJWS’s national advocacy campaign that seeks to end violence against women, girls and LGBT people worldwide. AJWS is inspired by the Jewish commitment to justice that works in 19 countries to end poverty and realize human rights.

Ms. Auerbach, a graduate of Harvard Law School, spent a decade as a practicing attorney. She is a Tisch Rabbinical Fellow and a fourth-year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion She is also a trained community organizer who took part in a student delegation to El Salvador in 2013.

“We are proud to host Nicole Auerbach at what is sure to be a stimulating and eye-opening interactive discussion,” said Rachel Radna, the president of Riverdale Temple. “I invite the community to meet Nicole and learn the size and scope of the violence against women issue, and identify ways we all can work to solve this problem, locally and around the world.”

Open to the public, the discussion will be held in the Riverdale Temple’s social hall, located at 4545 Independence Ave.  Admission and on-site parking is free.
