Community Board (CB) 8 and Volunteers of America-Greater New York are calling for backpacks and school supplies.

The collection is part of the Operation Backpack 2014 initiative, which collects brand new backpacks and new school supplies for homeless children living in New York City’s shelter system.

CB 8’s Board office is now a drop site for the annual drive and will accept donations from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily at 5676 Riverdale Avenue, Suite 100.

In addition, every Duane Reade location will accept backpack and school supply donations. Dozens of other organizations are also participating in the drive.

Rachel Weinstein, the vice president and chief development and communications officer for Volunteers of America-Greater New York spoke to the importance of the backpack drive.

“We need to equip children with all the tools to allow them to succeed in school,” she said.

This year’s goal is to collect 16,500 backpacks in total. CB 8 will accept backpack donations from Monday, July 14 to Thursday, July 31.
