Cafeccino Bakery

269 W 231st St.

Tucked away on West 231st Street, this nook packs an impressive spread into its small space. When it first opened a decade ago, Cafeccino was one of a kind in the neighborhood.

“There were not so many bakeries in Kingsbridge then,” said Mike Zach, Cafeccino’s owner.

He originally began as the owner of Mr. Bagel on Broadway back in the late 1980s. Mr. Zach quickly sold that business and decided to cash in as one of the few bakeshops along the Kingsbridge corridor.

The quirky little shop offers far more than baked goods. Paninis and pizza are also popular items.

“You cannot find in New York better pita,” Mr. Zach affirmed.

Sweet and fluffy chocolate chip cookies are also one of Cafeccino’s best offerings. Mr. Zach, who hails from Israel, says Cafeccino is also a hot spot during High Holidays.

After 10 years in the business, Cafeccino’s delights have not yet lost their charm on Mr. Zach.

“It’s a unique place. It’s not just a bakery,” he says. “It’s the best!”

Gruenebaum’s Bakery

5663 Riverdale Ave.

The timeless recipes at Gruenebaum’s originated in Frankfurt, Germany, where current manager Honey Banin’s grandparents and father operated the original bakeries.

Amidst their extensive list of highly-crafted staples, Gruenebaum’s is especially proud of its water challah. A Jewish-German innovation, this challah trades in an egg base for a water base.

“When heated, it tastes like Italian bread,” Ms. Banin said.

Gruenebaum’s dairy section is popular among students from nearby Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy looking to indulge in bagels and other savory bites. Ms. Banin said the bakery draws crowds from a variety of backgrounds and she is glad to have a strong rapport with many of her customers.

“It’s nice because a lot of them aren’t kosher. Sometimes people will ask for bacon, though, and we send them across the street,” she joked.
