Petitioning strengthens democracy

Posted

To the editor:

During the month of June, representatives from both major political parties — Democratic and Republican — have been collecting signatures on “designating petitions” for candidates who wish to be on the ballot in their party’s state primary, to be held on September 9, 2014.

Signing a designating petition for a candidate is true “grassroots” democracy because, without a minimum number of signatures from enrolled party voters, the candidate cannot be listed on the primary ballot.

So, if you signed a designating petition, congratulations — you took part in the political process! The next step is to vote in your party’s primary in September and, most importantly, to vote in the General Election in November. Your vote counts!
