Eagles’ head coach Gus Ornstein makes no secret of the fact he is unhappy that his team was removed from the ranks of the Hudson Valley Football League.
It’s hard to blame him.
Fieldston won 5 straight Hudson Valley championships with only 1 losing season in eight years under Ornstein’s tutelage.
But last year, in its first season playing as an independent, the Eagles fell to 2-4. Though not one to make excuses, the sub-par record served to entrench Ornstein’s angst about his team being pulled from its former league.
“It would be one thing if we were physically beaten up or playing schools with bigger enrollments,” said the coach.
The Eagles attracted fewer students than usual to its football program last year — only about 28, compared to between 35 and 40 in recent seasons.
This year, Fieldston will take to the field with a diminutive roster of 24 players. This is 15 players fewer than both the Riverdale Country School — currently plays and independent schedule — and Horace Mann, which play in the Hudson Valley League.
Like virtually all high school sports teams, the orange and white will face the added challenge of having to replace several key players lost to graduation.
Gone is starting quarterback Sam Healy, who threw for 982 yards and 13 touchdowns last season and tacked on an additional 327 yards on the ground.
