Police seek Kingsbridge murder suspect (update)

Police are searching for Kingsbridge resident Jose Torres, who they say fatally stabbed his roommate today at 1 a.m. inside their 2724 University Ave. apartment.

Authorities are using a description provided by the 59-year-old victim’s girlfriend, who lived at the same apartment as both men.

Police arriving at the scene this morning found the victim bleeding from multiple stab wounds. Authorities said video footage from the apartment building showed Mr. Torres fleeing the scene, leaving a trail of blood down the hallway and stairs.

Emergency personnel took the victim to St. Barnabas Hospital, where attempted treatment was unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead. Authorities did not release the victim’s name since they were yet to notify his family.

It was not immediately clear what may have prompted Mr. Torres to attack his roommate. Neighbors said they had never seen them argue.

Police at the scene of the crime declined to comment, while neighbors and passersby were shocked at the sight of bloodstains on the stairwell and second-floor hallway where the victim lived.

“It’s horrible because everything here is very calm. Thank God we have never seen something like this,” Cidenia Basquez said in Spanish. “I’ve been living here for six years and this is the first time I’ve seen something like this.”

Police released a photo of Mr. Torres on Tuesday afternoon and asked anyone with information about the crime to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
