‘Princess of Salsa’ La India lights up Lehman Center stage

Posted

Move over Lin Manuel Miranda, there’s another musical icon in town celebrating her Puerto Rican roots. La India — nee Linda Viera Caballero — brought the house down at the Lehman College Center for Performing Arts on Saturday night.

She finished her show sharing the stage with one of her own idols — composer and pianist Eddie Palmieri. La India credits Mr. Palmieri with helping her break into the male-dominated world of salsa music when he offered her the chance to record her first solo album in Spanish in 1992, when she was just 23 years old.

She was already a seasoned performer, having fronted a group called TKA when she was a Bronx teen and her label, Reprise/Warner Bros. Records, was hoping to market her as the Latin version of Madonna before she firmly planted her flag in salsa and house music territory.
