Residents roiled by home invasions

A string of home intrusions and burglaries in private homes west of Henry Hudson Parkway, near Wave Hill, has homeowners on high alert.

Before midnight on Oct. 4, a homeowner near West 252nd Street said that she awoke to the screams of the family babysitter crying, “Thief!”

An unknown man in a hoodie was standing in the family’s kitchen.

When the intruder heard the woman’s screams, he ran out through a kitchen door. According to the homeowner, who asked to not be identified, he did not steal anything.

Though there were two SUVs in the driveway and other obvious indications that the family was home at the time of the incident, it did not deter the perpetrator from breaking in, the homeowner said.

It was not the last time her home, which the woman shares with her 12-year-old daughter and husband, would see an intruder.

On Oct. 12, a burglar attempted to break in again, but was scared off by an alarm before entering the premises.

The woman, who has lived in the neighborhood for about 16 years, said that her family has been extra vigilant after the two incidents. Her daughter is so frightened by the intrusion attempts that she is afraid to be alone in the house.

“She’s terrified if she hears a sound,” the mother said.

On Tuesday night, she joined other concerned residents, some of them victims of similar crimes, at a meeting with Deputy Inspector Paul Rasa, the commanding officer of the 50th Precinct, to address a series of known home invasions that occurred this month.

According to residents, there have been about five attempted break-ins, some of them successful.

“I noticed that everyone I told, they then immediately told me of another story, so it just became a little bit alarming,” said longtime Riverdale resident Jennifer Klein, who helped organize the meeting. “I became concerned.”
