Riverdale Children’s Theatre presents classics

Riverdale Children’s Theatre begins its fifth season at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre with two classic musicals to entertain the entire family. The nationally acclaimed children’s theatre company, whose previous productions of “Annie,”
“Peter Pan” and “Beauty and the Beast” saw record crowds at the Lehman College venue, has produced two more shows highlighting talented Bronx kids and special guest artists.

“Oliver” is the beloved classic musical that will enthrall audiences with the tale of a young orphan’s quest to find a home and family in Victorian London. Adapted from the novel by Charles Dickens, with book and music written by Lionel Bart, Dickens’ larger- than-life characters will perform  iconic songs including “Food, Glorious Food” and “Consider Yourself.”

This RCT Centerpiece Production features a cast of 60 second through eighth graders from the Bronx and beyond, along with special guest artists David Winter as Fagin, New York City Opera alumni Michael Wanko and Theresa Santiago as Mr. Bumble and Widow Corney and teaching artist Guy Ventoliere as Mr. Brownlow.

Show dates are Saturdays, Jan. 17 and 24 at 8 p.m. and Sundays, Jan. 18 and 25 at 2 and 6 p.m.

“42nd Street” is a star-is-born story capturing the spirit of anyone who has ever pursued a dream. The comedy based on a 1933 Busby Berkeley movie musical, 42nd Street tells the story of a starry-eyed young actress named Peggy Sawyer who comes to New York to audition for the new Julian Marsh-directed musical. With book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin, this memorable show features a cast of 32 young artists, incredible tap dancing and a score that with the iconic tunes “We’re in the Money” and “42nd Street”.

Show dates are Thursday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 and 6 p.m.

All shows are at the Lovinger Theatre, located on the campus of Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Blvd. W. All seats are $15 online and $16 at the door.
