Foreign film

The Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture will show the Danish film Brothers at the society meeting house, located at 4450 Fieldston Road, at 7 p.m.

The film is about two brothers: Jannik is a drunk recently released from prison and Michael is a well-respected army major and family man. When Michael is believed to have been killed during a mission in Afghanistan, Jannik helps his brother's family. As Jannik and Michael's wife, Sarah, grow close, some surprising information about Michael comes to light.

The film is directed by Susanne Bier (Open Hearts), and stars Nidolaj Lic Kaas (Jannik), Ulrich Thomsen (Michael), and Connie Nielsen (Sarah), who has also acted in American films such as Gladiator, Rushmore, and The Devil's Advocate. The movie runs one hour, 57 minutes.

Yam workshop

Wave Hill, located at West 249th Street and Independence Avenue, will host a cooking demonstration of sweet potatoes and yams at 1 p.m.

Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day will teach a tuber tutorial aimed at helping participants learn the difference between sweet potatoes and yams.

A chef from Great Performances, Wave Hill's exclusive caterer, will join in to help cook harvest-themed dishes.

The program is free with paid admission to the grounds, and will meet at the Wave Hill House.

Performance series

The Bronx Council on the Arts' BX Indie Performance Series together with the Performance Space at the Riverdale YM-YWHA present an evening of contemporary dance from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Y, 5625 Arlington Ave.

There will be performances by BRIO winners Christal Brown and Alethea Pace.

Ms. Brown, a two-time BRIO winner for choreography, is founder and director of INSPRIT, a dance company that creates contemporary works woven with themes from her African heritage. Ms. Pace, a two-time BRIO winner for dance, will perform with the Physual Dance Company choreographed by Richard Rivera.

Health talk

The Spuyten Duyvil Library, located at 650 W. 235th St., will host nutritionist Alice Kaufman, at 2 p.m.

She will discuss the best way to sustain weight loss while improving health. Participants will learn which foods are not only good for the waistline, but also the heart, lungs, brain and bones.

The talk is free and open to the public.
