Say yes to school uniforms

To the editor:

This letter is adapted from one I sent to the mayor urging the city to adopt a uniform dress code:

Dear Mr. Mayor,

When I was a teenager I went to private school, but we had no uniforms. The student body elected to get them, but the school administration said no.

Times have changed. Some public schools do have a dress code. It was a challenge when my daughter went to public school, because there was no code of what to wear. Now, the same situation exists for my granddaughter. Why on Earth should there be such a war over taste in clothing and such competition over designer clothing among school children?

We need a uniform dress code for all public school children. There are enough things to compete over in school; what we wear should not be one of them. Not everyone can afford designer clothing from head to toe.

With a dress code, the friction will lessen. If there were uniforms — from head to toe — these expensive designer clothes would not be an issue for parents who cannot compete.

The only issue in school should be education, not class warfare.
