Schervier's CEO recognized for keeping patients out of hospitals

Finding yourself in the hospital for an extended stay can be disconcerting for anyone. For elderly patients of nursing care facilities it can be particularly daunting. That’s why the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched an initiative to reduce avoidable hospitalizations and asked nursing home operators to cooperate.

Bon Secours New York Health System’s CEO Carlos G. Beato, who operates the Schervier Nursing Care Center in Riverdale took the problem to heart and he has now been rewarded with the CMS Outstanding Achievement Award for the fourth quarter of 2013.

In March 2012, CMS issued a request for applications to join the Initiative to Reduce Avoidable Hospitalizations among Nursing Facility Residents.  Schervier Nursing Care Center partnered with Greater New York Hospital Foundation to implement an effort focused on long-stay nursing facility residents who are enrolled in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, with the goal of reducing avoidable inpatient hospitalizations.

Based on a nomination received by the CMS Medicare-Medicaid Coordination office (MMCO), Beato received the award in recognition of the extraordinary effort and outstanding work in implementing the initiative through Greater New York Hospital Foundation’s New York-Reducing Avoidable Hospitalizations (NY-RAH) model.

“This award demonstrates the accomplishments of our entire team at Schervier,” said Beato.  “I am honored to lead a group of dedicated healthcare professionals who daily demonstrate leadership, teamwork, initiative, versatility, and compassion in being good help to those in need.  We look forward to continuing to partner with CMS on this important initiative.”

Bon Secours New York Health System is comprised of Schervier Nursing Care Center, a 364-bed long-term nursing facility providing skilled nursing care, rehabilitation services, palliative care, and care in a secure environment for those with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments.
