Solar panels at CMSV

The College of Mount Saint Vincent has installed 1,400 solar panels at its largest parking lot, in the latest among its environmental projects that are expected to save the school more than $100,000 each year in electrical costs, or about one-third of its current expenses.

The panels, which sit high above the more than 230 parking spaces at Villa Lot, are expected to produce more than 540,000 kilowatt-hours of energy each year. It is one of the largest solar arrays in the city, according to the college.

In other projects the college describes as part of its efforts to go green, it has switched to LED lighting fixtures in the dormitories and in outdoor areas.
SolarCity, a company that provided the panels, is now installing additional solar panels on top of the Peter J. Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center. More panels are expected to go up on other buildings around campus in the future.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent is a Catholic liberal-arts school founded in 1847 by the Sisters of Charity.

CUNY scraps application fee for low-income students.

CUNY will eliminate its $65 application fee for low-income students starting this fall, Mayor Bill de Blasio said last week.

“For our young people and their families, knowing that that fee is eliminated, this clears the way and encourages students to believe that they, too, belong,” the mayor said.

The no-fee measure will benefit about 37,000 high-school students who apply to CUNY each year, the mayor’s office estimated.
