Shouts of 'G-O-O-A-A-L' punctuate historic soccer game

The New York Red Bulls (NYRB) took on New York City FC (NYCFC) this Sunday at a sold out Yankee Stadium in the two rivals’ second ever meeting, and the so-called ‘Hudson River Derby’ did not disappoint. The Red Bulls ran out 3-1 winners and celebrated long after the game was over in front of some 1,500 of their fans.

In May, NYRB won the first meeting 2-1 at their home stadium in Harrison, N.J., but that looked to be a distant memory six minutes into Sunday’s game when NYCFC midfielder Thomas McNamara found the back of the net with a low angled strike. NYCFC pushed hard for a second goal early on but found the Red Bulls defense holding firm, and the half ended at 1-0.

The Red Bulls came roaring out at halftime and scored twice in five minutes, with striker Bradley Wright-Phillips volleying in from close range and defender Chris Duvall finding the eventual game winner with a back post strike. The partisan crowd was muted, and a late third goal from young defender Matt Miazga killed the game off.

The story runs deeper than just the rivalry game however, as the Red Bulls recently finalized a deal to field their third division squad, NYRB II, at the Columbia University Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, just across from Marble Hill. Meanwhile, New York City FC is still searching for a permanent home, and some reports say they could be looking into the very same Columbia athletic complex after a deal to put a stadium in Flushing, Queens, fell through. Either way, soccer is on the rise in New York and the stage is set for future battles, on and off the field.
