Speed bumps coming to Cannon Place

Activists are welcoming renewed plans to install three speed bumps on Cannon Place after years of clamoring for the safety measures.

In August, Community Board (CB) 8’s Transportation Committee voted in favor of the bumps, which the city’s Department of Transportation first proposed in 2012 to reduce speeding along the roughly half-mile that Cannon Place traces from Giles Place to Orloff Avenue.

Since then, objections from the Kingsbridge Heights Nursing Home derailed at least two scheduled installations for the bumps, according to activists.

An employee at the nursing home said new ownership does not have any objections to the safety measures, but could not comment on any concerns the previous owners might have had.

“We couldn’t be happier,” said Jack Marth, who helped organize an online petition demanding the safety measures. “We are getting the speed humps.”

He added that as traffic spikes across the city, it is important to keep children walking to and from school safe.

According to the 50th Precinct, the corner of Cannon Place and Giles Place was the site of six minor accidents in 2014, with no injuries or major vehicular damage.

“We expect they should be installed some time during the fall,” CB 8’s Transportation Committee Chairman Mike Heller said of the speed bumps.
