Support The Riverdale Y

Riverdale is celebrated for its many green spaces, pleasant homes, thriving religious institutions and inviting stores. As anyone who has spent some time here can tell you, its main asset is the people. And there are few places that both enrich and bring individuals together like The Riverdale Y.

One of its most beloved programs is its musical troupe, the Riverdale Rising Stars. The group calls on homegrown talent to produce first-class performances. From lighter shows like “Peter Pan, Jr.” to serious productions such as “A Chorus Line,” the group has delighted audiences for years. An inclusive philosophy encourages community members willing to make a serious effort to join in.

There’s also The Y’s range of athletic programs. The Stanley Lane Basketball League offers competitive fun for youths and adults alike. Gym memberships empower community members to get in shape. A pleasant pool offers fun swimming lessons for those wanting to learn.

The Y’s auditorium has hosted many memorable forums over the years. For mayoral debates, discussions among locals on the hottest issues and more, the second floor of The Y is the place to be.

From much-needed repairs to a new program at The Y, stories in this week’s Press reveal an institution in transition.

The Arlington Avenue organization’s new jazz series promises to enrich the community’s entertainment options. Maestro Ted Rosenthal, who is filling the unique role of artistic director for jazz, will bring world-class performances from the American songbook and more.

During the Riverdale Jewish Community Relations Council’s legislative breakfast at The Y on Sunday, there was some great news: a $150,000 grant to replace parts of the building’s deteriorating façade.

The state funds could be a great start to turning around The Y, which has operated on a deficit for years. Its generosity to the community — maintaining low ticket prices and offering its auditorium at no charge to presenters — has made it a challenge to keep the institution going.

While we praise The Y, let’s think of chipping in to its coffers, too. Bring a friend to a Rising Stars show. Consider a gym membership. You can even make a tax-deductible donation. Steps like these will make sure The Y keeps on thriving for years to come.
