The suspect in the recent brazen sidewalk killing of a man in Marble Hill has turned himself in to the authorities, according to the commanding officer of the 50th Precinct.

Capt. Terence O’Toole said on Monday night, Laquan Hamby came forward for the July 8 killing of Steven Maldonado, 22. The suspect was accompanied by a lawyer and his mother to the precinct located at 3450 Kingsbridge Ave.

“We have enough to charge him initially based on identification,” Capt. O’Toole said. “Now we are going to do lineups as well to cement the case.”

The captain added the Bronx District Attorney’s office would likely charge Mr. Hamby, 21, on as-of-yet- unspecified charges within the next 24 hours.

Capt. O’Toole, who became commanding officer of the 50th last week, said Mr. Hamby turned himself in after police identified him from surveillance video and likely contacted the suspect’s family.

Surveillance from the Rich 99 Cent & Up Shop, located at 5521 Broadway in Marble Hill, showed a man pacing inside the store around 9:30 a.m. on July 8 before leaping onto the sidewalk to shoot Mr. Maldonado. A reason for the killing was not clear.

Friends said Mr. Maldonado had been living in an apartment at the Marble Hill Houses. Capt. O’Toole said Mr. Hamby was also a Marble Hill resident, though the police official did not know whether the suspect lived in public housing.

Capt. O’Toole said Mr. Hamby had 10 previous arrests, including three robberies, though the rap sheet did not include any violent crimes.
