Suspects captured in bizarre burglary

Five people have been arrested in connection with a recent bizarre burglary of a Verizon Wireless store on Riverdale Avenue, during which thieves took a large black safe full of electronics out the front door, police said.

The suspects, ranging in age from 18 to 29, were apprehended in Washington Heights just half an hour after the 4:30 a.m. burglary at the 5909 Riverdale Ave. store on June 28.

Police said five men broke into the store and tried to make off with the safe, when it swung open and electronics spilled out onto the street.

Officers said the thieves scooped up as much of the stolen gear as they could before fleeing the scene in a Honda Odyssey and a Chrysler Town and Country.

The safe remained on the street well into the following day, occupying the far right lane of Riverdale Avenue and West 259th Street.

Two of the suspects live in the Bronx, though neither is from the northwest Bronx. The other three men live in northern Manhattan.

The youngest suspect, 18, is also facing separate charges of gang assault over a May 9 incident in Manhattan.
